DTi Recommends Switching to FAA-Approved Spring-Fast® Grommet Edging

Lockheed Martin is projected to be making about 156 F-35As per year. This aircraft has longevity!

They could save a potential $1.35M by replacing the glued-in nylon grommets (MS21266) on their F-35As with Spring-Fast Grommet Edging (M22529/2).

The estimated $1.35M in program cost savings and increased productivity can help Lockheed offset any residual labor challenges from the pandemic.    Plus who doesn't want to save money….and still get best-in-class performance.

Spring-Fast is simple to install, yields best-in-class performance and is fully qualified as an FAA-approved replacement part.  It already has NAVAIR approval.

Spring-Fast grommet edging provides at least 49% savings vs nylon and adhesive.  It will boost productivity by a factor of 9.5X  while providing best-in-class performance – no failures in 30+ years.

Any OEM in the aerospace vertical who uses the old nylon grommet edging with adhesive can take advantage of significant cost savings, and can easily estimate those savings using our Airframe Savings Model.

The Airframe Savings Model used to calculate overall install cost savings for Lockheed has several components:

  • Estimates of the time taken for each step in the installation operation for each grommet
  • The time estimate was used to calculate the install cost per grommet (below) using a $130 WRAP rate.
  • Installation Cost per MS21266 grommet – $54.62
  • Installation Cost per M22529/2 grommet – $19.93
  • The cost was applied to the # of aircraft (156) and penetrations (250) to generate a program savings value of $1.35M
  • This represents a 63% savings vs the old nylon grommet.
